Ata Kak’s cassette fell on deaf ears when it was self-released in Ghana and Canada in 1994. In 2002 the music-freak Brian Shimkovitz came across the cassette during a travel in Ghana and was so impressed by this amalgam of highlife, Twi-language rap, funk, hip-hop and electronica that he searched for the musician for eight years. The release of “Obaa Sima,” more than 20 years later, closes the loop on an intertwined story touching on expression, immigration and a life-changing experience.
After the concert a DJ-Set by Esa Williams will take place at the HAU2 foyer, a distinct yet expansive musical identity of vibrant, rhythmic and wholeheartedly positive productions.
